Spring 2009 meetings
We’ll be meeting on Mondays at 9am this quarter, in AP&M 2452. Schedule to be posted soon.
Winter 2009 schedule
Here’s the schedule we came up with in our meeting yesterday.
January 19 — Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday, no SaD-PhIG
January 26 — Cindy’s practice job talk
February 2 — Bożena’s practice BLS talk
February 9 — [ Something relevant to a job candidate? ]
February 16 — President’s Day Holiday, no SaD-PhIG
February 23 — [ Something relevant to a job candidate? ]
March 2 — Noah’s practice P&P workshop poster
March 9 — discussion of phonotactics: why restrictions?
HS, OT-CC, etc.
Here’s my handout from yesterday’s discussion, with corrections made to the tableaux. Here’s Colin Wilson’s handout on “counterfeeding from the past”, and here’s a draft of a paper that he wrote up on it.
Harmonic serialism / OT-CC tutorial
As I suggested in a message to the mailing list, I say we hit the ground running with a plan for our first week. To that end, I am offering to give an OT-CC tutorial, and in preparation we can read any one of McCarthy’s three most recent articles. Click here to vote for your choice before Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 9pm — I won’t vote myself, but I reserve the right to break any tie that may arise. The articles are:
- Harmony in Harmonic Serialism (ROA-1009)
- The gradual path to cluster simplification (Phonology 25.2)
- The serial interaction of stress and syncope (NLLT 26.3)
As usual, we’ll begin our meeting with a short round of butt-kicking and suggestions for the remainder of the quarter. Keep in mind that the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday falls on what would have otherwise been our second meeting (Jan. 19), so I suggest that our plan for our actual second meeting on Jan. 26 take advantage of the 2-week hiatus. A longer paper? A couple book chapters? Think about it.
New year, new blog
Winter quarter 2009 is almost upon us, and with that, a new round of SaD-PhIG meetings! We’ll be meeting at noon on Mondays in AP&M 4218. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, January 12, at which point we’ll set our schedule for the quarter. See you there/then.
