Fall 2009 meetings

The poll has spoken, and we will be meeting on Wednesdays at 1(-ish) this quarter. Our first meeting, where we will map out a plan for the quarter, is at 1pm in the ‘Fieldwork’ room in 1782 AP&M (a room in the annex building connected to ours on the north side). Sharon advises: “The room is cold, so dress warmly.”

Harmonic serialism / OT-CC tutorial

As I suggested in a message to the mailing list, I say we hit the ground running with a plan for our first week. To that end, I am offering to give an OT-CC tutorial, and in preparation we can read any one of McCarthy’s three most recent articles. Click here to vote for your choice before Wednesday, Jan. 7, at 9pm — I won’t vote myself, but I reserve the right to break any tie that may arise. The articles are:

  1. Harmony in Harmonic Serialism (ROA-1009)
  2. The gradual path to cluster simplification (Phonology 25.2)
  3. The serial interaction of stress and syncope (NLLT 26.3)

As usual, we’ll begin our meeting with a short round of butt-kicking and suggestions for the remainder of the quarter. Keep in mind that the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday falls on what would have otherwise been our second meeting (Jan. 19), so I suggest that our plan for our actual second meeting on Jan. 26 take advantage of the 2-week hiatus. A longer paper? A couple book chapters? Think about it.

New year, new blog

Winter quarter 2009 is almost upon us, and with that, a new round of SaD-PhIG meetings! We’ll be meeting at noon on Mondays in AP&M 4218. Our first meeting will take place on Monday, January 12, at which point we’ll set our schedule for the quarter. See you there/then.
